Emily Somers from Melbourne, Australia was first diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 27. According to a report in the Daily Mail, the art director’s life suddenly went from designing, advertising and attending weekend parties, to chemotherapy appointments and days spent in hospital wards.

Emily’s treatment went well and she went into remission, but after just six months, the lymphoma returned and she had to endure a second round of treatment.

Losing her hair was a side effect of the treatment. Emily found wigs too itchy and hated wearing them, so she took to wearing headscarves. She began to experiment more with her look, trying intricate designs and wearing bold colors — she didn’t want to blend into the crowd!

Soon people began to compliment her style. Emily realized that if she hated wearing wigs, there were probably other cancer patients who did, too. She decided to set up a website called Bravery.Co, where she could sell scarves sourced from all over the world to cancer patients and women who wished to support friends going through cancer. On top of helping women feel better about themselves, the proceeds from the scarves go towards cancer research.
