The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF), a nonprofit working to support research and otherwise serve the lymphoma community, will hold one its major fundraising efforts, Swirl: A Wine Tasting Event, in Chicago. The June 2 wine tasting will take place at the home of a LRF board member, Joseph Ferraro, with the evening’s sampling of world-class wines donated by Southern Wine and Spirits of America.
Swirl events have raised more than $175,000 to date for the LRF’s mission of finding a cure for lymphoma and improving services for those with the disease, and all proceeds from this event will again go to further that mission. The inaugural Swirl Chicago event also is being held on the eve of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting at McCormick Place.
“The Lymphoma Research Foundation is proud to have such a strong presence in Chicago and to bring our national Swirl event series to the area,”Meghan Gutierrez, the LRF’s chief executive officer, said in a press release. “On behalf of the organization, we’d like to thank Joseph Ferraro for his support of the event and extend our gratitude to Southern Wine and Spirits of America, Inc., for their continued support of the Swirl series.”
An estimated 1,700 people in the state of Illinois have been diagnosed with some form of lymphoma, a blood cancer.
The presentation and review of the selected wines, with an emphasis on Italian vintages, will be made by Serafin Alvarado, master sommelier and director of wine education at Southern Wine and Spirits of Illinois. Alvarado was recently included in Crain’s Chicago Business Magazine’s list of the top 40 people in the Chicago area who made a major impact on their industry before the age of 40.
“Over the last several years, the Swirl series has developed a national reputation as a premier philanthropic event in the Miami and Dallas metro areas, and now, Southern Wine and Spirits is thrilled to be able to sponsor a fantastic event right here in Chicago,” Alvarado said.
