Shortly after AJ Manus met his then-girlfriend Michelle in 2014, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Michelle supported him through six rounds of chemotherapy and once in remission, the couple decided they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together so began planning their wedding.

According to a report on time.com, the couple decided that instead of wedding gifts, they would ask their guests to contribute to the Lymphoma Research Foundation. In addition, they asked vendors and other companies providing services for their wedding to lower their fee with the difference also being donated. The couple hoped to raise $40,000 for the non-profit organization but totally exceeded their expectations when they discovered their generous friends and family and wedding service companies had donated more than $78,000.
