The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Greater Bay Area Chapter will host its 2016 Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta on Oct. 22-23 at the San Francisco Yacht Club (SFYC) in Belvedere, California.
This year’s campaign kicked off on April 28 at the SFYC with a guest speech from Dr. Mignon Loh, a pediatric oncologist and researcher at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. The campaign will continue with the Leukemia Cup Regatta’s VIP dinner on Oct. 22.
The guest speaker at the dinner will be blood cancer survivor Ethan Zohn, a former U.S. professional soccer player, winning contestant on the CBS show “Survivor: Africa,” as well as a philanthropist.
The SFYC will launch of the 2nd Annual Perkins Corporate Challenge on Oct. 22, a sailing competition targeting prominent Bay Area companies that wish to support the search for a cure for blood cancers. Corporate four-person teams will compete on J/22 class sailboats to win the Thomas Perkin Trophy, which will be awarded to the winning team at the VIP dinner that evening.
On Oct. 23, the event will continue with the Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta and festivities. Since its inception 11 years ago, the regatta has raised more than $6.2 million to support LLS’ mission – to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
The Pacific Union Cup festivities will start with a Sponsor Breakfast at the SFYC, and crews will board their boats. There will also be nonracing activities, including a Cruising Class on-the-water parade and sailboats with sponsors and honorary skippers. According to a press release, this year’s honorary skippers include Douglas Holmes, Drake Jensen, Steve Johnson, Chris Kostanecki, Rhett Krawitt, Brit Lacey, Chris Laub, Campbell Nolan, Bernard O’Driscoll, Lynn Spiller, and Robert Wilson. The Cup Awards Celebration and barbecue will get underway about 4 p.m.
Registration fees are $100 for cruising boats and $125 for sailboats. VIP dinner seats cost $1,000 per person (you can purchase tickets by calling 415-625-1139). Fundraisers will qualify for seats at the dinner event if they collect more than $2,500 per seat, for a maximum of two seats.
